According to the Business & Sustainable Development Commission (2017), achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) creates USD12 trillion worth of market opportunities in economic systems. However, many companies do not know how to evaluate the performance of the SDGs. Furthermore, there is no clear pattern for companies to act on the SDGs, and so on. This study aims to examine the research trend in the context of SDGs and business both in Japan and abroad, through a literature review based on the 5-step framework presented by the SDG Compass, and to find the essence of utilizing it in practical business. This study found that more research, such as how to integrate SDGs into the current business, is required for each step of the SDG Compass.
