Influence of Life Events and Environmental Education on Generational Differences in Environmental Awareness

<p>Public opinion surveys have shown that Japanese younger people have lower environmental awareness. Although life events have attracted attention as a factor in such generational differences, it is not clear whether they enhance environmental awareness. On the other hand, environmental education in schools since the 1990s in Japan is expected to increase environmental awareness among young people. In this study, we conducted a questionnaire survey to examine how life events and the experience of environmental education relate to the environmental awareness in Japanese adulthood. As a result, we found that the experience of environmental education, the sharing of housework and the experience of parenting the first child were the factors that decreased the generational differences.</p>

<p>The Workshop on Environmental Education in the Institute of Life Cycle Assessment, Japan was established in 2008, and this year marks the 14th year. We have published three special issues on "Life Cycle Thinking and Environmental Education" in this journal and one collection of teaching materials as a part of the activities of this workshop. In this commentary and discussion, our activities of the last 13 years are outlined and the current situation and future issues are briefly described.</p>

<p>More than 10 years have passed since the proposal of environmental education incorporating the concept of life cycle thinking (LCT). Some of the related teaching materials have already become implemented as a part of the educational content at schools. On the other hand, there is concern that teachers are constantly busy because various tasks inside and outside the school are increasing in addition to the usual educational activities. In this situation, it is not easy for teachers to introduce new teaching materials that require a lot of tasks to teach new concepts. In 2020, the influences of the new coronavirus have placed a number of restrictions on school activities. As a result, the barriers to introducing new teaching materials have become higher. However, the next one to two years is also a period in which we can expect substantial changes in education at schools due to changes in the social environment. This paper presents some issues in introducing LCT-based environmental education to schools based on the author's experience in its education and research. Then, I discuss the possibility that LCT-based environmental education will contribute to the changes in education that are currently underway or are about to be promoted in schools.</p>
