Deep Regression Models for Estimating Ambiguity in Functional Interpretations of Head Movements in Conversations

Head movements play essential roles in human conversations and entail intrinsic ambiguities in expressing and perceiving. This paper proposes regression models for estimating the degree of ambiguities in the head-movement function of conversation participants. As the ambiguities, we introduced expressional perceptibility and interpretational diversity, which are defined as the average and standard deviation of the ratings of multiple observers, respectively. This paper proposes convolutional neural networks, which simultaneously estimate both ambiguities, called μ-σ CNNs. The experiments compared the μ-σ CNNs with other models, which independently estimate each of the ambiguities, and confirmed that the μ-σ CNNs have potential to outperform the other models.

Language:Japanese Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal) Publisher:The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers Joint Work
From the functional aspects of head movements, this paper reveals the effects of how the mechanical reproduction of participants' head movements facilitates the interactions among participants in a telepresence system called the MMSpace. The MMSpace recreates the head movements of each remote participant by mechanically controlling the position and pose of the panel that displays the participant's face. We created a functional head-movement corpus of MMSpace-based meetings and analyzed the (co-)occurrence frequencies of the functions that appeared in the meeting with/without mechanical panel motion. The results show that the mechanically augmented head movements significantly improved the functional interactions such as between the speaker's rhythmic movements and the listener's back-channel movements.

This paper proposes machine-learning models for recognizing the synergetic functions between facial expressions and head movements in conversations. To discover such synergetic functions, we built a functional facial-expression corpus, which includes various facial functions beyond the affect display, and analyzed it with the functional head-movement corpus. The analysis revealed some types of synergetic relationships between the facial expressions and head movements, including reinforcement, multiplexing, and complement. To recognize such synergetic functions, we build several models using convolutional neural networks (CNNs), which input facial action-unit and head-pose sequences. The experiment results confirmed the potential of the proposed models.
