  本研究では、アメリカ文学における家と人種を詳細に分析し、文学テクストにおいて家が人種の表象にどのように作用しているかを検証する。本研究における家とは、物理的な建築としての「家屋」であり、文学作品において物語が展開し登場人物が生活する「場所」を意味する。作品内における移住・引っ越し（登場人物の移動）も研究対象とする。作品が家を語るとき、そのレトリックが人種と深く関わっているという仮説のもと、国家創生・国体維持の次元において効果的に使用されてきた、family, home, house等のメタファーに着目する。また、人文学的観点からアメリカにおける家屋の歴史を調査・分析する。

  本研究ではアメリカ文学における不動産表象を分析し、家やその土地の表象に潜む情動的効果及び政治的な欲望を明らかにする。人文学研究において、場所や空間に対する意識の転換を試みる研究が注目を集めるなか、個人主義的な思想が社会に蔓延し、格差が進行している。このような批評的な流れと社会情勢を背景に、本研究では不動産に注目する。家族に関するレトリックは血縁を核とし感情に作用するため、精密に分析することにより、家の表象に潜む情動的効果を明らかにすることができると予想する。また、土地に関する歴史や法律のレトリックを、文学研究の手法を用いて検証することにより、アメリカ国家の政治的な欲望を解明することを目指す。

  本研究の目的は、「ポーの作品に潜む領土拡張主義や対インディアン政策に対する批判を明らかにし、土地や空間の獲得に対するアメリカ国家の欲望を分析す る」ことであったが、ポーは本作において、入植者のように土地を切り開き、土を掘り起こし、財宝を探すルグランたち描く。地中に財宝が眠るという設定は、 捕鯨絶頂期に出版された本作から、16年後の1859年にペンシルヴァニア州のタイタスビルで油田が発見されたことすら想起させ、欲望の矛先が移りゆくことを予見するかのようである。 ポーが陸軍の兵士としてほんの数年間過ごしたサリヴァン島は、黒人を奴隷という財産へとtransformさせた歴史を持つ島であったが、そこを舞台にポーはア メリカの国家的な欲望が西だけに向かっているのではないことを示している。ルグランたちは、元奴隷のジュピターを従え、入植者たちによる開墾を模倣し、地 表だけでなく地下に眠る財宝を掘り当てる。アメリカ国家における土地への欲望は、建国以前から現代へと続き、国家建設の基盤となっているといえる。

  Poe depicts an enclosed space in which madness subverts sanity in "The System of Dr. Tarr and Professor Feather" (1845). The names "Tarr" and "Feather" evoke a sense of public torture. Significantly, Poe attempted to link human insanity with racial elements in this work. Although it is set in the South of France, the inclusion of terms such as "the South" and "Yankee" should be evidence of the tension between the North and South of the United States over slavery suggested in it. Notably, this work highlights the ambiguity of sanity and insanity as the power relations between the two groups are reversed.
  This paper focuses on the rhetoric characters use to discuss insanity. The symptoms of the patients are described in the rhetoric of assumption, in which a man believes himself to be something else. For example, it is defined as follows: "I mean the man who took himself for a bottle of champagne." The person who thinks he is something other than himself is considered mad in this work. What emerges from this rhetoric is the association of madness with situations in which it is not easy to define oneself with "what I am." This paper aims to analyze the ambiguity of madness and sanity, as well as the issue of self-definition in such situations and further clarify the intersections with the issue of race.
