一般読者向けに、甲斐恵林寺の住職快川国師の末期の偈として知られる「心頭を滅却すれば火もまた涼し」の来歴およびその後の語義・使用例の変化を明らかにした。あわせて、快川の前後の時代の語録に見える当該句の用例を整理し、当時の臨済宗の僧が当該句を下火（火葬）の法語としてたびたび用いていたことを指摘し、快川が末期の偈としてこの句を選んだと語り継がれていることの意味を論じた。
