    <p>From the third grade onward, science learning involves the construction of knowledge through the application of one’s prior knowledge, experiences, and mental images, as well as through the connection and integration of diverse forms of information such as language and imagery. The application of these forms of knowledge is deeply supported by children’s prior experiences with natural phenomena and their learning in Life and Environment Studies. Thus, it is considered that subsequent learning in science develops as an extension of and connection to learning experiences cultivated in Life and Environment Studies. This study aimed to develop lesson design strategies for Life and Environment Studies that promote high-quality observations leading to the connection of information essential for knowledge construction in science. Specifically, it focused on two cognitive functions involved in the process of connecting information, “sense-making” and “perceptual fluency”, as proposed by Rau (2018). The study conducted a case-based analysis to examine what kinds of activities enable children to interpret and connect information in ways that promote higher-quality observations.</p>

    <p>For children to improve their scientific explanations, they must accurately identify the naïve conceptualizations within their own thinking. To achieve this, evaluative judgement, the capability to make decisions about the quality of work of oneself and others, is crucial. Evaluative judgement requires objectively grasping one’s own thinking, and its connection to metacognition has been strongly noted (Lodge et al., 2018). Metacognitive knowledge plays a particularly significant role in evaluative activities. Based on these findings, this study aimed to clarify the research question “What kind of metacognitive knowledge do children use to form evaluative judgement in constructing scientific explanations?” through a case analysis of elementary school science classes. From the results of a case analysis of a fourth-grade science class on “Changes in the State of Water”, the following points became clear. First, a variety of conditional knowledge emerged that children deployed when using their evaluative judgement to construct scientific explanations. These could be categorized into four categories: “Understanding science problem-solving activities,” “The importance of convincing others and building consensus in science learning,” “Awareness of the relevance of knowledge and information,” and “Understanding people’s cognitive characteristics and emotional tendencies.” Second, a variety of declarative knowledge and procedural knowledge were also found that children use when forming their evaluative judgement. Categorizing this, “content knowledge” and procedural knowledge could be organized into five categories: “Problem setting,” “Structure of scientific explanation,” “Science perspectives and ways of thinking,” and “Expression.” Third, the relationship between the components of evaluative judgement in constructing scientific explanations, particularly metacognitive knowledge in “quality and standards” and “assessment criteria,” was suggested.</p>
