  • Zhang Jian and the Transfer of Western Business Methods through Japan into China

Zhang Jian and the Transfer of Western Business Methods through Japan into China  (Portland, Oregon, US)  2016.04.02   The Business History Conference

     View Summary

As for the so-called “Western impact" and “Chinese response," Zhang knew not only the importance of trying to understand the state of global economics, but also the need to learn from the West. Regarding what he should learn, however, Zhang did not consider business methods, even those from the West, in isolation from things China's or Nantong's political and educational situation. Except for purchasing equipment and machinery directly from the West, Zhang adopted advanced methods through Japan and his visit to Japan exerted far-reaching influence on his entrepreneurial activities. Most importantly, he adapted what he learned abroad to fit local conditions and his ideas about society. Above all, his ambitious goal of realizing local self-government comported with the so-called public good he was pursuing. All his efforts benefited not only his hometown, but the country as a whole.
